A new — and healthy — eating option is coming to downtown Tuscaloosa.
Frutta Bowls, a New Jersey-based health food restaurant, is about to have its first location in Alabama thanks to some local entrepreneurs.
Richard Arrington said that he and his co-owners — Brent Keith and the husband-and-wife team of Josh and Samantha Giambalvo — are set to open Frutta Bowls next to OHenry’s Coffees in the Downtown Rock Point development at 2531 University Blvd.
The grand opening is planned for June 10.
The concept is built around the health food options of acai, kale and pitaya, which is more commonly known as dragon fruit.
These ingredients are mixed in with other fruits, such as strawberries and bananas, and a variety of toppings to create dishes that cross multiple palates.
“The concept itself is not very well-known with people,” Arrington said. “We plan on changing that.”
The restaurant also will offer varieties of kombucha, a drink of fermented black or green teas flavored with fruits, juices and other natural flavors.
Arrington said this fermentation process gives the mixture a probiotic effect that aids in gastrointestinal health, while providing a level of mental clarity and focus.
Again, this is something new to the Tuscaloosa market, Arrington said.
“The concept of acai, kale, pitaya and kombucha is a relatively new thing, but once you try it, it can really be life-changing for people,” Arrington said.
